16/8 and diabetes

I’m new to fasting so starting off with 16/8. I’m type 1 diabetic and it’s pretty well controlled. I have roughly 2 hypos a month where I have to eat carbs to bring my sugars up. If this happens during my fasting period will it ruin everything? Am I better off not doing it at all or is the majority of days fasting better than nothing?

Answer

It won’t ruin anything with regards to IF. People doing longer fasts with other goals (autophagy, etc) might care more, but it’s so insufficiently studied I don’t think anyone knows for sure. For most, IF is just a good way of keeping their eating habits under control, and deviating here and there doesn’t impact that. And many people (like me) intentionally don’t do IF every day (I usually don’t on Sundays, as we have “family breakfast”).

Since you said your new, expect 2-4 weeks before you get used to not eating during the fasting hours, and it’s ok to break your fast during that time too - but do your best and you will adapt to the new normal and barely even think about it anymore.

Fellow type one here. 2 weeks in, doing roughly the same time frame. From a numbers sense, my numbers are so steady! Think I’m starting to see some results. I’m always looking for Dia-buddies! Feel free to message if you want! Good luck 👍🏼
