24 Hour Fast and Weightlifting

Just wondering what the over all experiences of people here are with full day fasting and weightlifting.

I want to start doing a regular FRI fast for religious reasons. At the minimum, this would go from dinner THU til sundown on FRI. However, to really honor the spirit of the fast, I feel I should stretch it out until breakfast SAT.

I already intermittent fast during the week, from about 1900 until 1200.

For my workout, I use Tactical Barbell. 3x a week. Most weeks are 3-5x5 (heaviest week is 3-4x1-2) of back squat, bench press, pull-up (working up to weighted pull-up). Then either a few sets of KB swings or (on FRI) 1x5 deadlift. Followed by stretching. And an after-dinner walk (about 30 minutes).

I know that at the end of the day, I need to try it myself and see how it goes. Just wondering what other people’s experiences were so I could get an idea of what to expect or if maybe I need to shift my workout schedule so I don’t lift on FRI.

Edit: To clear up any confusion. My workout will not be at the 24(+) hour, but will be at the 21-22 hour mark. So I’ll go from having lunch (about 1/3 of my daily calories) to doing more of a OMAD with lifting before the meal schedule (which I used to do). My main concern is the waiting a few (or potentially almost 12) hours after I lift to eat. I used to, when doing OMAD, come home and immediately scarf down food (plus the protein shake after lifting). There will be a much longer gap now than what I used to do.

I usually do 18:6 with some 20:4 omad mixed in. I lift 2x per week. Lifting during or after a long fast is significantly harder than after having eaten. Especially the large exercises that tax your central nervous system like squats, deadlifts, bench press. You can do it, just expect less weight and early fatigue.

Physiologically fasting depletes your glycogen stores, which is where your muscles store energy, so in a fasted state for me it just feels like I have less energy and stamina for each set.

Best of luck finding what works for you!

Tons of weightlifters will fast 48 hours for the natural hgh that’s supposed to be at an all time high around then. I do 10+ miles runs on 24 hour+ fasts all the time.

Like you said, try it yourself. We’re all different.
