6th day of a 10 day dry fast. How should I refeed? Are fruits okay, and juice?

I plan on taking a one-day break after the 10 days dry fast is over. I plan on drinking water (duh), orange juice and eating fruits. I will then start another 10-day dry fast.

Answer

I have never understood breaking a fast with fruit.

While fasting, particularly dry fasting, your body is in hard-core ketosis. In fact, it seems that many of the benefits of fasting stem from the production of ketones and the subsequent efficient running of the body on said ketones.

So when it comes time to break the fast, going straight for sugar seems… wrong.

Why pump in glucose when the body is already, at a week of fasting, well accustomed to running on ketones (aka fat).

I always break my fasts with fat and protein. I would never chug sugary OJ personally. So given the choice, I would eat fruit (slowly, methodically). That said, I often break mine with water, broth, then food. (I find the more frequently one fasts the easier the transitions become. I have made organic healthy “pizza” after a 3 day dry fast and eaten it first thing, no problem)

Finally, if your plan is to do yet another dry fast, why would you want to feed your body glucose and shut down ketone production? Only to then have to have your body swap back into ketosis, potentially exposing you to “keto-flu” and waning energy levels?

I say stick with fat and protein, ditch the fruits.

(also, props to you for doing such long dry fasts, I can’t pull off 10 days dry, much less 2 in a row)

(insert fangirl screaming voice with a deep male voice) !!!!!!! keep it up, that’s what I like to hear!

Please feel free to keep us updated, I’ll be the first to say I’ll read your daily journals during the fast and breakage of the fast.

Answer

If you want to keep the weight loss going I would mainly eat watermelon on your day off.

It is 92% water so a great choice for you and coconut water since it has more electrolytes than gatorade.

Good luck.

Sounds awesome! Congrats!!! think I’m going to start this I had been doing so good and then thought I could handle 1 cheat day turned into 5 although I only ate once per day. I gained like 17 pounds (I’m sure majority water weight). Did you drink tons of water before?
