Alchohol as energy source

Hi. I’m laying here wanting to sleep and i get this odd question into my mind. If we disregard the need of vitamins, minerals etc. (All handled by pills or something calorie free), and you have access to water. Would a caloric intake from pure alcohol be able to sustain a person living? I know we’d hit problems due to lack of fats and protein (let’s disregard these bodily functions), would the calories in alcohol be a “sufficient” energy source or is the calories from alcohol just different in some other way? As if a guy was stranded on an island and had nothing to eat, would drinking alcohol for it’s calories do him any good? I’m tired and heading to sleep, hope the question makes sense haha. Just had to throw my thoughts somewhere.

Answer

You could in theory - do what you’re saying for a short period.

There are some calories in alcohol but the much bigger problem would be cirrhosis of the liver from having to process that much alcohol.

So even if you could get enough calories you would die from liver or organ failure after a short period far sooner than starvation from lack of calories…. Likely less than a week.
