Alternative? Coffee on an empty stomach causes irritation.

Hello,

Lately I’ve noticed that drinking coffee (black, w/ cream, w/ sugar, or without sugar) on an empty stomach in the morning results in an upset stomach and a trip to the bathroom. Are there any alternatives to having coffee? Or perhaps a way to prevent the irritation? This usually happens with coffee that I make at home (pour over) or with a nespresso. If I get an americano from starbucks it’s less of a problem (but the costs add up and the plastic waste does too).

I tried tea before, but that causes nausea.

Thanks!

Answer

I experience nausea from certain black coffee, black tea, green tea, and machta. However, I find Yerba Mate very easy on the stomach and it has enough natural occurring caffeine to provide stimulant affects. I will take heat from our many friends in South America for not advocating the traditional way of preparing it but there are alternatives that might be less off putting to someone who is new to drinking it. The infusion is meant to be sipped through a metal filter straw but you can see how others like in this video have figured out alternatives such as using a press or other filter. I prefer the good brands from Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil and source it from some local Hispanic supermarkets. I didn’t care for the lower grade Yerba mate sold in health food stores. I swear by it and it’s how I start my day every day. You can adjust the strength to your liking and will probably want to add a dash of stevia to make it more palatable. Even the caffeine in it (in Spanish referred to as mateina) doesn’t seem to cause the jitters regular coffee does. Check it out.
