So canned tuna is cheap, relatively high in protein and low in fat, but it’s only recommended to eat it once a week due to high mercury levels. Are there other alternatives/specific brands anyone suggests with lower mercury levels or otherwise? I’m tired of eating chicken😅
I would also recommend homemade seitan as an alternative. Given you have time and are able to access some of the ingredients at a cheaper bulk store (I use Winco in Northern California). My friend adapted this recipe and posted on her blog several years ago: https://hardfemmephysique.wordpress.com/2016/04/19/smoky-maple-seitan/
If you take chicken and beat it with a hand mixer for a while, it gets a similar texture to tuna. I like to eat it mixed with dill and a bit of Mayo for a creamier consistency, great for crackers. If you want a fishier flavor, you can actually empty a fish oil capsule into it (weird idea, I know!) as those are usually filtered for mercury. Adding shredded/powdered seaweed to the mix would also help.
