Any anyone ever tried alternate day dry fasting? Wondering if it is safe

Hello all,

I have been practicing a alternate day water fasting for a few months and have already lost around 50 lbs. I am considering switching it to alternate day dry fasting instead and wondering if anyone has ever tried it and if it is safe?

Answer

If you’re referring to eating once in 48 hours combined with dry fasting, I’ve done it without any ill effects. For about 8 hours after a meal, I usually drink zero-calorie teas (anything with Hibiscus in it, since that’s super rich in antioxidants). That’s to move the food and get the digestion & absorption done, and, of course, you could do it with just water for that function alone, and experiment to find the optimum number of hours for you. Then I go dry for around 36 hours. Before breaking fast (the compound caloric fast, to be more precise), I’ll hydrate with at least 20 minutes before any solid-food intake. Then I’ll eat without the slightest concern for breaking my system.

  1. Depends how fat you are, the more weight you have the longer you can fast (with water).

  2. Depends how well you eat when you do eat, the better the quality the food the longer you can fast (with water). People often don’t think about this but you’re body needs vitamins and minerals + a bunch of other stuff.

So in theory if you’re water fasting you can alternative day fast or longer if you abide by the above.

Dry fasting I don’t think so, I think you can do for a short period of time (a few weeks, maybe a month) but I don’t think it is sustainable. Also you have to think about pleasure to an extent. Goals are good, especially if you’re trying to improve your health. But dry fasting can get very tedious. I personally fast a lot, think it’s amazing but most of that is with water. I tried more frequent dry fasting and found it miserable and didn’t really notice any increase benefits.
