Anyone fasting while on medication?

In particular medication which requires you to eat beforehand. Does anyone have experience with this?

Would it be impossible to fast if I need to have these medications twice a day (morning + night) ? Does anyone have any workarounds?

Answer

Ask your doctor or pharmacist about it. Some medications can be less effective without food or damaging without a buffer so best to leave it to the professionals to decide. You don’t have to bring up fasting if your worried about their reaction to it, just ask if taking it with food is necessary.

Answer

Did that once and only once (wasn’t even fasting intentionally just wasn’t hungry so I didn’t eat that morning) with a medication that was suggested, not directed, to have with food.

So sick. Holy shit. I was grey, queasy, and work sent me home within half an hour; I wouldn’t advise it. Follow the instructions- they’re there for a reason

Answer

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

If food is required, how much food and what kind of food?

How late in the morning & how early/late at night do they have to be taken?

I’m sure there is a work around.

Answer

“Take with food” is usually to avoid stomach upset. Some do need to be taken with food though so talk to your pharmacist to confirm wether food is required or just suggested.

I currently take three RX, two once daily and one three times a day. Last week I fasted for 117 hours (five days) and still took my RX plus daily multivitamin with no issues. The one I take three times a day is recommended to be taken with food but I never do and I haven’t had any problems with nausea.

You can do one of three things:

  1. Take them on an empty stomach and see how you tolerate it.
  2. Have them with black tea or coffee with a little HWC added. Or just the milk/half and half/HWC. Technically breaking fast but not spiking your insulin too much. SOME MEDS DONT MIX WELL WITH COFFEE
  3. Have a small meal, 150-250 calories or less twice per day. Ideally non starchy veg (salad greens, cucumber, steamed broccoli, green beans or cabbage), a keto protein shake a piece of cheese, a couple crackers etc. Something that won’t spike your insulin too much. Stay below 3-500 calories per day total.
