I have a 6 mo old baby and would like to continue breastfeeding for another 6 mo at least. Could IF affect milk supply?
(Not trying to calorie restrict or lose weight.)
When breastfeeding it is essential to take in the proper diet for you and baby to remain healthy. If you are fasting then neither of you will be getting what you need. I can understand the why but it is definitely something you should wait to do when baby is done nursing. Stay healthy and safe.
I’ve been doing IF since October. Still nursing my 2021 baby and tandem nursing my 2019 kiddo. No noticeable dip in supply. If you’re doing something like a 16/8 schedule and not massively restricting calories then it’s doable. Especially as your baby eats more and more solids.
I’ve done IF since my baby was 6 months. I was also still nursing my 2 year old as well. It Never effected my supply. Baby is perfect and healthy. My weight loss has been slow because I’m not eating in a huge deficit. Maybe even maintenance most days. But my GI issues have disappeared so that alone makes me want to continue.
I’m breastfeeding 13 week old twins, noticed a drop when I didn’t consume enough calories for a few days when I first started 2/1. Since I upped my calorie intake, I am losing weight and they’re getting enough milk. I typically do 16:8, but a few days a week I have been doing 18:6 just depending on when I have time to eat (I also have a 2.5yo lol).
As long as you are getting enough calories within your eating time you should be fine. I am currently nursing a 3 month old and haven’t noticed any dip. Usually your maintenance calories are what you need to lose weight while breastfeeding. If you go into a deficit below that you may see a decrease in supply.
