Are any juice cleanses good?

My wife and I are looking at doing a short juice cleanse at the beginning of the year. Research is confusing, are there any short juice cleanses that are beneficial?

Answer

Not really. Cleanses/detox are bullshit. At least the kind we’re talking about here. Of course somebody who has a terrible diet will probably benefit from it. Not cus they’re doing a cleanse/detox but rather cus they stop eating garbage for a bit. There might also be some weight loss which is due to the lowered calories. A lot of it will be water tho. As for the actual “cleansing/detoxing” claim, that’s what your lover, kidneys, and colon are for. Plus I’ve never seen anybody specify which toxins are actually being cleansed.

Edit: I stand by lover.

Answer

No. It’s utterly fraudulent bullshit made up by people with things to sell. There is absolutely zero data to demonstrate any benefit at all, never mind the magical bullshit the juice cleanse product companies sell you.

What about fastings? I’ve read they can be beneficial for the body as they induce the autophagy process if you go longer than 14-16 hours without eating, I know this shorter periods of fasting are proven beneficial (intermittent fasting) but could periods of days or a full week of fasting be beneficial too?

After college and a couple years working a finance job with long hours at a desk, I was the heaviest I had ever been. I tried a 10 day smoothie cleanse based off a book by JJ Smith. I lost 13 lbs and in general felt a lot better moving forward. People were commenting on how healthy my skin looked and that I seemed happier after a week of doing the cleanse. It gave me a nice reset to change my diet and eating habits. My job was taxing mentally so I needed to eat snacks during the work day to maintain energy and focus. I would eat apple slices, carrots, and hard boiled eggs to keep my energy. The book recommends those snacks throughout the day if you need to supplement the smoothies. It was difficult, my girlfriend gave up after 3 days because she said it was too miserable being hungry. She also worked a more physically demanding job in healthcare so I can see how it would be tough for someone in a physical job to do. Not sure how healthy this is, I would recommend consulting a doctor.

Here’s a link to the book I used with 30k reviews and lots of before and after photos.

Answer

I like juicing during a fast. I have more energy, less brain fog and keeps me from getting grouchy. I don’t think that you’re actually ridding your body of toxins, as others have stated that’s what your kidneys and liver are for. But I feel like there is something beneficial about giving those organs a break.
