It’s something my Indian dad always says, but I sort of assumed it was BS.
My dad also says that fruits should always be eaten before a meal instead of after.
Logic behind eating fruit before is the belief that fruits digest faster than meat or bread/rice etc and will have tendency to cause issues inside your body
Not sure how right or wrong this is but thats the ideal behind it.
I believe the practice of eating fruit first in a meal is common in Ayurveda, maybe you can research that more. Ayurvedic food practices are really interesting. As for the dark fruits, I know different colored fruits and vegetables have different concentrations of nutrients and other healthy chemicals, dark fruits like blueberries, blackcurrants etc are full of antioxidants and are anti-inflammatory that doesn’t mean other lighter fruits don’t benefit your body in other ways. So eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can, range wise, and reap the benefits over time.
So what’s the definition of healthier? Bananas are a not so dark fruit, but for me, bananas make the difference between being on hypertension medication and not. I had high blood pressure my entire adult life until I started eating bananas.
Bananas, it appears, have an ACE inhibitor in them (the same class of chemical found in many hypertension medications). If I had to guess, that ACE inhibitor (like any medication) isn’t as effective for everyone. For me, it’s a 30pt difference in systolic and diastolic. My doctor took me off my BP meds about 8 years ago and I’ve maintained a healthy BP since.
So for me, there’s no fruit healthier than a banana as it’s either that or meds, or I’ll probably face an earlier death.
Bananas are also loaded with nutrients. Avocados are probably one of the most nutritious fruits around (yes, they’re fruits). They have a dark skin, but a light colored flesh. Citrus, pineapple, grapes, papaya. These are all very nutritious fruits.
Sure, blackberries and blueberries are very nutritious, but they don’t blow these other fruits out of the water or anything.
Just my $0.02.
Darker fruits and vegetables do tend to be a little better but there are things in lighter fruits and veggies that darker ones don’t have as much of. I wouldn’t say it’s complete BS.
Those purple berries have the highest antioxidants. Iceberg lettuce vs darker leafy greens. If you look at a list of so called superfoods, most of them are darker in color.
There is some science studies to consuming fruit before versus after a meal but it’s not earth shattering. It’s not harmful to consume it after so do whatever you like.
There are only a handful of fruits worth eating, and they happen to be dark. I eat blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries, and that’s about it, unless you mean “fruit” sort of loosely. The pigments are mostly a proxy, I think, but the rule works pretty well.
I don’t know about the before and after, but I do sort of like to eat them separately from meals.
