Answer

My understanding is that, if anything, they’re better.

They’re picked at peak ripeness and flash frozen so the nutrients are locked in at that moment.

Non frozen fruits are sitting around, often refrigerated but not always, while their nutrients deteriorate.

It really depends on what you want to do… I make smoothies a lot with frozen fruit and it lasts longer so it’s my go to.

Their health benefits are very similar but frozen is often picked at peak freshness so it may be more nutrient dense depending on the source.

Related question, if anyone knows- is it safe to eat frozen fruit without heating it? I know such products have been contaminated with bacteria. Out of paranoia, I usually only use frozen berries in baked products but if safe I would love to eat them just defrosted.

Answer

I just don’t understand the “more for your money” part of these posts… Fresh vegetables are inexpensive (in many places) and one doesn’t have to pay for all the water/ice in the frozen package.

A frozen bag of machine-chopped/smashed broccoli covered with ice,no idea how long it has been there, or one could pick the best-looking fresh broccoli… Choose wisely.

And as for health, we know that it is better not to add water to one’s vegetables. So there is no way to reconcile the fact that frozen vegetables are basically soaked in water. Frozen vegetables taste like my grandma’s vegetables not like a 21st century’s chef’s al dente deiciousness. No offense to your grandmothers, just saying that we have learned a few things over the last 500 hundred years.
