Are there foods you can't eat too much of?

I don’t mean literally—I know everything has a theoretical limit where it becomes toxic—but rather practically? For instance (and correct me if I’m wrong), I don’t think eating 10 apples a day, or a whole celery, is ever going to pose a health problem (as opposed to, say, 10 candy bars).

Are there other foods like this? I’m curious about walnuts and other nuts in particular.

Answer

Not really—eating unlimited fruit and veg (in quantities like 10 apples a day) your big issue would probably be the level of activity you’d induce in your bowels. Nuts, you’d probably just be overdone for calories, given their high energy density.

There are many super healthy foods out there. However, it’s important to keep in mind that more is not always better. Some foods can be good for you in moderation, but seriously harmful in large amounts. For example, omega-3 and fish oils: omega-3 fatty acids are essential for our health. They fight inflammation in the body, play an important role in brain development and reduce the risk of heart disease, to name a few. Since most diets are low in omega-3, supplements have been gaining popularity. The most common supplements include omega-3 capsules produced from fish, fish liver and algae. However, too much omega-3 may be harmful. The usual dose ranges from 1–6 grams per day, but taking as much as 13–14 grams per day may have blood-thinning effects in healthy individuals. This may be risk, especially for people who are prone to bleeding or are taking blood-thinning medications. Furthermore, taking high amounts of fish liver oil may result in excessive vitamin A intake, which may cause vitamin A toxicity. This is of particular concern for children and pregnant women.

I don’t ever have an appetite and am having a hard time eating… seems like for the past 3 months I’ve been living on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and ensure, is that bad? Also have to admit I’m getting tired of pb& j and open to high calorie easy to eat and prepare meal ideas. I am also going through benzo withdrawals so hunger is a real issue, I actually have to force down me and I’m scared of losing to much more weight.

Answer

Too much of just about everything is bad for you.

Learning about whether something is good or bad and then the optimal level of good (it’s usually not in the extremes) is how I approach things - esp in health and fitness.

10 apples a day is probably not a great idea - lot of fructose which is a carbohydrate that is most easily converted to fat.

Answer

I can’t get enough raspberries.

So, what does your post mean?

I’ve definitely eaten whole bunches of celery in 1 sitting…

Same with whole bags of frozen (cooked) broccoli…

I can eat a ton of (roasted, unsalted) almonds in 1 sitting —or almond butter or peanut butter, too — but as the other comment here pointed out, lots-o-nuts are high in calories (energy).
