Became I'll after sucrose

Sorry for the subject typo, should be “ill after sucralose”.

I’m not hard core like most of the people I see here. I typically like to do a 42 hour fast on occasion and a daily IF.

I’m around 11% body fat now and would like to drop back into the sub 10% again. I’ve been doing about one 42 hour a month now. In addition a daily 5 hour window of about 1500 calories keto.

I’ll also put in a re-feed day in about once a month as I strength train and run. This refeed also seems to make weight fall off more than anything else. Always has, very curious to why. I do it to prevent metabolic down regulation.

Anyway, I did something dumb and drank a coke zero about 28 hours into my last 42 hour fast. A couple hours later I became violently I’ll and spent the evening throwing up. I pulled some abdominal muscles in the process.

I’m not sure if I had some tainted water or if the sucralose jacked my insulin and caused me to get sick.

I’m just curious what possibly happened. Either way, I’m not touching the stuff again. I know 3 people that have sever reactions to sucralose (one is migraines, and the other two intestinal).

Answer

You’re right in that studies show an insulin responses to sucralose. But I think your sickness might have been more related to the carbonation and acidity in the diet coke. Diet coke is highly acidic, so on an empty stomach, it probably totally threw off your stomach acid balance and your body reacted the only way it could- by purging

I’ve had issues with various artificial sweeteners in the past, but mostly just that they’d give me the runs. So now I stick with just Aspartame, which gives me zero issues and still lets me enjoy soda while fasting, even by day 14. I also use a flavor powder that contains it for my electrolytes mix, makes it palatable.

Answer

Sucralose gives me gas, like mentos in coke gas. Avoid artificial sweeteners. If you avoid all sugars and carbs, you probably won’t have a need for it, and things will taste sweet which you did not notice before. If you must have sweetener use stevia - either the liquid drops, or the extract for which you use little tiny spoons. Don’t use the teaspoon sugar equivalent powder. It’s overpriced anyway.
