Been fasting for 4 days.. right way to break it?

My goal was for 110 hours, I’m currently 92 hours in. I might be going to a Greek restaurant tonight I don’t know for sure yet, but if I do, I’m unsure of whether to eat or not. I’d probably get a Greek salad with grilled squid but I’m worried I may literally shit myself. Any thoughts, experiences or advice?

Answer

Well, first if all, you should be worried that you might shit yourself.

I would break it with one or two meals of broth with a bit of coconut oil and/or ghee. Then one or two meals full keto, with some veggies with a lot of fiber and some probiotics. After that, you are good to go.

I’ve done several water fasts (currently near the end of day 4 of a 5-day fast; longest has been 8 days). So…

I find that breaking a fast with avocado is a really gentle reintroduction to food. Resist the urge to go crazy (i.e., eat like a normal person). After a 24hr fast, it doesn’t matter. After a longer fast… you’re asking for an upset stomach and possibly diarrhea.

Think about it: the body doesn’t run your digestive tract for “funsies…” and it shuts it down when not needed. You’ll need some time to restart those processes. You might be uncomfortable if you don’t “pace yourself.”

There’s also the danger of “refeeding syndrome…” which can be fatal. So it’s said. I figure that if you stick to “real foods” (and not processed junk)… meh, you SHOULD be okay? Then again, if you die… well, I guess that we won’t know! I’d skip the falafel.

I’m also doing a 4 day water fast, ending at 2pm today. I’ll be breaking the fast with a few cups of miso soup and probiotics tablets, then I’ll have a light Japanese (sashimi!) dinner later on tonight.
