Pork-based products or pork’s meat has been considered a “bad” food. Is it really?
It’s a source of protein. Certain parts are lower in fat and higher in protein like pork tenderloin. It’s more affordable than some other protein sources so that is benefit for some people who want to eat animal protein but have budgetary restraints.
If pork is wild then it’s relatively healthy - not as good as grass fed beef etc
But the problem with modern pork is pigs are fed a highly inflammatory diet not consistent with what they should eat which increases the omega 6 composition of the meat to likely unhealthy levels.
Ocassional pork consumption if fine but there are so many better options (grass fed beef and organs)
Not bad but not healthier than other proteins and in the spectrum of options, probably towards the unhealthy end.
It’s considered unhealthy mostly due to how it’s prepared and how large portions typically are. If your goal is nutritional value, then anything over 4oz. per person is overkill, and you still need greens to carry the brunt of your nutritional needs.
It’s popular for many reasons; low cost, tasty, versatile, and very savory. Nutritious is not one of them.
Essentially what it comes down to is that it’s not inherently “Bad” for you unless there are specific health reasons. In general it’s considered “Inadequate” because the benefits your body reaps from it are significantly lesser than other sources like white or red meats
Beside protein pork is a good source of:Thiamine. …Selenium. …Zinc. …Vitamin B12. …Vitamin B6. …Niacin. …Phosphorus. …Iron.
On the down side, pork is very high in fat which is really bad.
Some people consider it an ‘unclean’ source of meat. Pigs are omnivores and have similar digestive systems to humans. Pork is particularly rich in thiamine (vitamin B1) and easier to digest than red meat, such as beef, lamb, bison, elk, etc.
I eat meat, not a lot, but do not cook pork myself. It gives me skin breakouts and itchiness if I eat a full serving. It is OK if I eat a little bit of pork dumpling or bits of bacon, but not a piece of pork chop.
