Best Whole Bean Coffee?

I’m looking to improve my morning coffee by switching from pods to beans freshly ground myself. What are your absolute favorites? I bought Stumptown’s Hairbender beans yesterday and was sorely disappointed. Didn’t taste like anything special. But I also ground it in my nutribullet and put it in kuerig pod. Maybe try a pour over technique?

I had to check what sub I was on… I don’t think it’s the beans, you’d have better luck with a decent grinder and something like a V60, Chemex or French press. I don’t know much about using the kuerig or their pods but I would assume that it’d be fairly lackluster ran through a machine since it’d be robbing most of the quality of the beans.

If you want to grind your own beans get a proper coffee grinder. Beans need to be ground to different sizes depending on your brewing technique. Personally I prefer french press, but at the very least avoid anything with a paper/absorbent filter, those filters remove the desirable oils from the coffee.

As far as coffee quality, look for single origin coffee try some different ones and see what you like. Usually when coffee doesn’t say where its from its from Columbia.

Pour over coffee is delicious and I agree finding a local roaster that you like is the best. I’ve had trouble buying good beans off the shelf. Sometimes you can find just roasted beans. The aroma is amazing. I like the ritual of the pour over in the morning too

I work at a coffee shop and have recently switched to pour over for fasting. I would highly recommend getting a ceramic or metal Kalita Wave.

Get some whole beans from a local coffee shop if you can, ideally lighter roast if you want to do pour over. Depending on how much coffee you drink you could also ask the people at the store to grind it for pour over for ya, provided you’ll drink it fairly quickly. Other than that, you’ll need a scale (which you likely already have if you’re doing IF), an electric kettle and your phone timer.

A good recipe is 18g ground coffee in a rinsed filter, add 50g of freshly boiled water (ideally 92-96C) over ~10s and give a little swirl. At 0:40-0:50 add another 100g water (total 150g) and give another swirl. At 1:20-1:30 add a final 150g water (total 300g) and give a final swirl and then a gentle lift and tap down. Simple and tasty :)

It’s a nice little morning ritual which can go in place of breakfast if you don’t have breakfast imo!
