hey girls, im currently taking rigevidon daily. i plan to go on a 21 day fast starting monday and was hoping to come off my pill at the same time, but ive been told fasting on your period is dangerous. i dont have time to start and finish a period before monday so was wondering if birth control spikes insulin levels, would it break my fast?
Whoever told you fasting on your period is dangerous doesn’t understand how periods work. Why would it be more dangerous on your period than before? None of the blood or tissue lining your uterus that is shed during your period is something your body needs/was going to reuse, correct? That’s why it’s leaving your body.
In a normal cycle, the entire cycle, your body is doing prep work of some sort to get ready to support a pregnancy. There isn’t any one time in a cycle that it is going to be dangerous for you to fast if you’re healthy.
Now, any birth control pill (and possibly other forms of birth control) can spike your blood glucose level. However, that will be glucose already in your body, which would probably spike in the first few days of a fast anyway. That’s part of fasting. If you’ve been fasting in shorter periods to prep for a longer fast, then your body should be able to handle this just fine. If you didn’t, then your body is going to handle it however it handles it and it might make that first week rougher than it needs to be.
However, in a normal, healthy individual, it shouldn’t affect your fast given how long you plan on fasting. That being said, pay attention to your body and don’t keep going if it doesn’t feel ok.
Fasting on your period is only “dangerous” if you tend to eat more or binge when you are. Just makes it a bit harder. I find that longer casts tend to make my period come earlier and heavier. Inconvenient and annoying? Yes. Dangerous to health? Nah.
