Body Compostion Changes while Fasting

Hello everyone!

I hope to find a answer to this:

x = Full day of fasting \/ = Half day of fasting

While i´m fasting the % of my Fat increases, and as soon as i eat again it decreases by a few percent.

Same thing with the % of my Muscsels but reverse.

Is there any scientific explanation for this?

I´m using this scale: https://www.diashop.de/media/catalog/product/files/30316141.pdf

These scales/monitors use a technology called “bioelectrical impedance analysis”. ELI5 they send very minor electrical currents from one end (i.e. one foot) and measures the time it travels until the other. Then it takes in your body weight/height to give you an estimate in terms of percentage it might be.

The problem with this method is that it heavily depends on the status of your body. I.e. try to measure it, then drink 1 liter of water, wait for 30 minutes and get on that monitor again; you will see a much different rate because the water in your body will change the rate the current is passed all the while impacting your weight (thus messing up its’ percentage calculations since water has different density than rest of your body). Clearly neither your body fat nor your body mass had any impact from the water, but the machine does not know that.

That does not mean these monitors are useless. They are great at catching trends (i.e. over a month declining trend of body fat), but comparing individual measurements has a huge variance.

Finally if you really want to know your real body fat, the best methods are dipping inside a water tank or hydrostatic weighing, but you need professionals (i.e. medical staff) for that to make it accurate and is not worth the pain imho.

Also a tip, if you want more consistency only measure yourself in the same situation (i.e. woke up, used the restroom, stripped naked, then measured).

Answer

Water weight is the reason for that. Water and glycogen inside your muscle will go away as soon as you start fasting and fat will begin to burn once you deplete all the glycogen in your muscle. Therefore, bodyweight decrease with water loss which will make body fat % to increase and once you start re-feeding water weight will quickly regain; therefore, body fat % goes down. If you would like to cut fat while fasting you would see the result when you fast for at least 3 days.
