Bone broth (chicken broth): any way to make it taste more palatable to me?

Today was the first day I made a mug of hot chicken broth using a powder I bought. I don’t know what I was expecting but it was difficult to finish due to the intense taste. Maybe I added too much powder, or maybe I need time to adjust to the taste, but it was hard work. Other than using it in soups and stews, is there anything I can add to the drink to change the taste?

Personally, the easiest way for me to eat it is simply by using it to cook my rice (instead of water). I’ve also found it enhances the flavor of my rice and pairs well with meats (I also enjoy the “earthy” taste of bone broth, however). The other option would simply be to try making the bone broth yourself - there could be differences in the taste of powdered versions compared to liquid. It’s also super easy to make!

Liquid bone broth always tastes better then powder IMHO. I like Kettle & Fire but it can get expensive.

I would just go to the grocery store and pick out one of each one that doesn’t have insane amounts of sodium and try them until you find one that you like. Personally I prefer the taste of beef bone broth.

FYI its also insanely easy to make bone broth yourself at home. You literally throw all the ingredients in a slow cooker and come back two days later and you have bone broth. If you want to have bone broth for the week roast a chicken for dinner on Saturday (or roast it and use the meat for lunch during the week), throw the broken up carcass (all you have to do is snap/cut the bigger bones) in the slow cooker with some vegetables and then Monday night you have bone broth.

Not sure where you live. I buy liquid chicken broth in cartons at Costco. Not sure what your getting with a powder.

TMI warning - The only time I drank chicken broth straight was when I needed clear liquids before a colonoscopy. It was ok, definitely sipping a warm cup kinda thing.

I use chicken broth instead of water in any dish I want a sauce or soup.

The flavor of bone broth can vary a lot between brands. I would suggest trying some different brands to see if there are ones that you enjoy the taste of more.

To use up the broth that you have though, you could try some of these recipes:

I think ginger, garlic, and cayenne is a tasty combo!

And miso is another good addition!

I make my own broth and in my opinion it is superior, I find store bought very salty. Making your own is easy and most butchers are happy to cut bones up small these days, if you prefer chicken, you may be able to ask your butcher for the chicken carcass left over from cutting the chicken up for breasts and what not. Good luck to you, bone broth is my bff.

If you have access to farmers markets, I would buy bone broth from the ranchers. That’s what I do and the flavor is fantastic. I’ve never had packaged broth so I don’t have a way to give you a comparison, but I can definitely recommend what I buy.

I’ve been drinking bone broth for years, never been able to stomach the chicken broth I make… it’s delicious just not nice to drink. I make a beef bone broth and flavour it with spices very similar to a pho. It’s delicious!

Add a bunch of garlic and make Czech Garlic Soup ! I love adding a bit of fresh oregano, shredded carrots, and spinach on mine.

Or use in Egg Drop Soup !

Or just get those jars of fried garlic and shallots. Sprinkle on top and add some green onion and/or cilantro. Finish with a lil bit of white pep. Should be good for a quick snack.
