Breaking a 41h fast help.

I did a 41 hour fast starting after dinner Thursday night and ending a lunch on Saturday. Friday dinner time was hard to not want some food and Saturday morning was super easy (almost didn’t eat lunch). When I broke my fast on Sat I ended up with bad intestinal discomfort and other issues. I ate a small piece of streak, green peppers, fork full of rice and a few tortilla chips. It was not a pleasant fast breaking experience and looking for help on what is best to take in first after a longer fast. Any help/advice appreciated.

Some folks don’t tolerate bone broth well…but I’ve never met anyone who didn’t do well breaking a fast with two eggs…whether you eat em soft boiled, scrambled or over easy…2 plain cooked eggs…then wait an hour before introducing something else….

When I did 72 hour fasts I made a simple vegetable soup (broth, mixed veg, spinach, spices) to break the fast and I experienced no problems. An hour later or so I ate some more substantial food but nothing too junk-y (wanted to encourage regrowth of beneficial bacteria in microbiome with nutritious whole foods). I’m currently on a longer fast and plan to break with plain bone broth since I’m not sure how well I’ll tolerate solids right away.

Create a food log for yourself. Document all meals when you break your fast and see what causes a reaction and what doesn’t.

Some people are lucky - I’m not one of them. Some folks can fast 72 hours and throw a steak on the grill and have a side salad with fries. I’d be on the toilet for hours if I did that.

Some people like to have some broth and an egg for the first hours after breaking a fast. Try some kombucha to give you that healthy gut moving forward. It’s all guess and check moving forward.

The problem is we want the reward. Our brain is willing to make the trade - abstain for x hours but feed me all of my cravings as soon as the hour is up. Your gut is not on the same page. Just be patient with yourself and find the breakfast that works for you specifically.
