Breaking a fast due to family issues

I was planning to do a 21-day water fast, unfortunately, I had to deal with some serious family issues and I had to break my fast, I was only 60hrs in (this was my first prolonged fast) and had to spend an entire night in a hospital so the only food that I could eat was a two simple donut and a large coffee with cream. How bad did I messed up my metabolism? Is it ruined permanently or will it go back to normal? Edit: I’m a 18M, 5’9 and I currently weight about 190lb

The notion of the “ruined” metabolism is wildly oversold by folks on all the edges of food habit extremist advocacy from intuitive eating (“fasting is disordered eating”) to keto (“carbs are murder”) and, yes: fasting.

When I was at USNA in the mid-70’s, one of the mail carriers that delivered for the dorm was a Bataan Death March survivor. In his mid-50’s he was fully recovered and vibrant from one of the worst metabolic misadventures you could conceive.

Relax. You can restart whenever it fits in.

Also hope the family emergency is working out.

You didn’t cause any harm. May be difficult to immediately start another fast with high carb meal. I recommend no carbs for several days before starting. In my opinion the best thing is to eat a high fat zero carb meal like a big ribeye. Keeps you sated for a long time and no wild insulin swings from simple sugars.
