Breaking fast with meal replacement shake

I’m planning on doing a 72 hour dry fast and I am going to break the fast with a Garden of Life meal replacement shake. Is this a good way to break the fast or is there a better way?

Answer

It depends on its composition?

As I understand it, you want to avoid carbs and sugars first meal out of a fast, to avoid a heavy and sudden hit to your insulin, which has the potential to make you feel woozy.

Some protein shakes have zero carbs and sugars, so added to milk, that could make a good landing strip from a fast.

Some meal replacement shakes, by definition, are carb heavy, intending to replace an actual meal, which could potentially make for a rough landing.

So it really depends on the composition of that particular shake. Some are high carb, some are none at all.

Rule of thumb is you want to break with water, protein, or fats, because they don’t hit the resting insulin as hard. For this I find plain milk or yoghurt pretty good.

Answer

I would personally not due to the long list of ingredients. If you must break a dry fast with calories, I would advise a product that’s simple and clean, such as:
