Breastfeeding 16:8, tips please!

Hi all! New to this forum but not to IF. Female, 28, SW 175, GW approx 140 (going by how I feel more than weight).

Years ago I lost considerable weight doing 5:2, eating whatever I wanted on the 5 days and 500cals on the 2 days. This week I’ve started 18:6 and just wondering what people prefer and why? Im finding myself eating tonnes of carbs and sugar during the 5-6 hours I’m eating. My goal is to lose weight, but I’m also breastfeeding a 3 month old so need to be conscious of micronutrients and maintaining supply.

Is exercise and extremely clean eating a definite to see weight loss with 18:6? I’d love your tips! :)

Answer

IF may tank your breastmilk supply depending on how your body reacts to stress. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t start IF until 3 years post partum.

Cutting calories -> supply tanked,Longer periods of non-eating -> supply tanked,Work stress, sleepless nights due to baby, exhaustion -> supply tanked

Some things are controllable while others are not. Having too many stressors could lower your milk supply too low.

Definitely talk to your doctor about this first because the last thing you want to do is start calorie restriction and have your baby not get the nutrients they need. There’s a reason IF is generally not recommended for pregnant and nursing women.
