Broke my fast nearly 24 hours ago. When can I eat normally?

I fasted for six days, consuming zero calories over that time. I supplemented with electrolytes during the second half.

Broke my fast at midnight last night with chicken and veg broth and a poached egg. Also took B vitamins and more electrolytes. Then went to bed.

Today I had the same thing again for breakfast. Also more B vitamins and electrolytes. Had a small low carb lunch. Dinner was sausages and roasted Mediterranean vegetables. Had a few glasses of milk for the phosphorus it contains.

I feel completely normal and haven’t suffered any symptoms of refeeding syndrome yet, nor any digestive problems.

Is it ok to resume normal eating tomorrow, carbs and everything? Am I now in the clear with respect to refeeding syndrome?

I’m hungry and just want to eat everything :)

Answer

Refeeding syndrome is more of an issue if you are emaciated. If you are of normal body condition or higher and doing a relatively short fast true refeeding syndrome isn’t likely. Digestion can be slow to start up after a 6 day fast so it is prudent to be careful when starting to eat again. An easily digestible meal for the first meal is a good idea but you can go back to eating “normally” after that.
