Calculating BMR based on fasting weight loss?

M/30/270lbs

Being a tall, fat, but relatively healthy man in my 30s, it’s always been tough to figure out my actual basal metabolic rate. All the calculators out there just have you plug in age and weight (no regard for lean vs total) and spit out something between 2000-3000 calories. I’ve never considered it to be very accurate.

I’m about to break a 7 day water fast and have noticed through my smart scale that ive been reliably losing 2lbs per day (measured each morning, hydration closely monitored).

Now I’m a professional blacksmith and I do a lot of LISS workouts, but 2lbs of fat a day means I’m burning off around 7000 calories every 24hr period which seems crazy. Or maybe it’s just my body eagerly shedding weight because I’ve got 100 lbs of body fat to burn.

Just wondering if anyone has any insight into the physiology of this stuff; I find it fascinating and am absolutely thrilled with my progress so far.

Answer

It’s showing 2lbs/day because your system is empty and you’re not carrying excess water weight.

The scale showed me an 11 lbs loss at the end of my 7-day fast. 6 lbs of that was back 3 days later as I started putting food in my system again (I was eating well too, mostly salads).

I think realistically you can expect 0.5 lb real fat loss/day.

Just pay a visit to DexaFit if you have one close by, or many sports medicine clinics have similar medical tech avalible. This will get you a very precise measurement of your BMR. And stick around for a VO2 Max test also (uses the same machine).

I used to be a far bigger patron of these services, but I still go in about once a quarter for BMR, VO2 Max and a dexa scan.
