Calories in canned fish much lower in India than in Europe?

Hi everyone!

I am currently in India and ordered these different tins of fish, but I am a bit confused on the calorie count.

It says for example the sardines are 85kcal for the whole can while this amount in Europe would be for sure around the 200/250kcal mark.

Is there any mistake or error in these nutrition labels or is just fish in Asia lower calorie somehow?

Anyway thank you!

Answer

You have to go by the amount of grams per serving.

For example, that middle link you provided, the whole can is 200g. Drained, is 120g. The nutrition label shows calories for 40g drained, and 100g drained

The last one you provided has 120g of drained weight, and the calories are per 100g serving (I assume, in drained weight)

Edit - also, these are all different types of fish. They’re going to have different amounts of calories per serving, just like how chicken has a different number of calories per serving from steak
