Can fasting help to repair DNA damage due to ionizing radiation?

Hi

I had a long series of X-rays done and now I am concerned about damage to my DNA due to exposure to ionizing radiation.

Will fasting help to “reset” my DNA?

Thank you

Answer

There is a study that indicates that 30 day IF may induce regulatory proteins as part of DNA repair in healthy subjects. It appears their study is indicating the prevention effects of these proteins as part of IF, but doesn’t get into if it helps current issues.

That said, you probably haven’t had enough radiation exposure to cause an issue.

Answer

There isn’t enough evidence yet to be sure.

There was a tiny study that found an association between intermittent fasting for a month and an increase in some regulatory proteins associated with DNA repair. The study is way too small though.

DNA damage, replication and repair is an extremely complex topic.

DNA is being damaged and repaired all the time. There isn’t much you can do to influence it.

Answer

You might be taking the x-rays a bit out of proportion. A single transatlantic flight exposes you to five times the amount of radiation than a single chest X-ray. Pilots and air attendants do have a slightly higher incidence of some cancers, but they are exposed to that on a daily basis.

Answer

Wouldn’t worry about it unless it was a CT scan, there are some supplements proven to help reduce the damage if you take before and after for a few days, NAC, resveratrol, vit C, astaxanthin and glutathione.
