Can most calories come from protein drinks?

I’ve been doing longer fasts the past few weeks but am finding it hard to get enough calories in. I also started eating a sugar-free diet. Nothing sounds good anymore! And even with avocados, nuts, cheese, nut butters…I’m having trouble eating enough. I eat lots of fruit/vegetables.

Is it ok that many calories come from protein drinks/shakes? I add in some extra fats and blend. Is this nutritious enough?

Answer

I don’t think so. Jason Fung in The Obesity Code is not a fan of protein shakes. It’s still processed food. I thought he promoted a high protein diet, but in his cookbook, he wrote that 20 to 30% of protein is enough. Higher amounts are not sustainable. You forgot about meat, seafood, if you eat them, beans and legumes.
