Hey everyone. I’ve came across a video that said the basal metabolic rate decreases when fasting. The guy didn’t said how much or for how long. So, that made me think, is it a prolonged fasting period worst for weight loss? I mean, in comparison with OMAD and keto, for example.
You will lose weight if you’re not eating. It is impossible, outside of medical conditions that can be fixed, for someone to not lose weight if they’re eating less calories than their body burns. If you’re moving around and existing like a normal human being, and not eating, you’re gonna lose weight. You’re gonna lose weight if you’re just laying in bed all day not eating, too. You’re not gonna lose it slower than someone eating.
Literally any googling of people that have been forced into fasting, or fasted voluntarily, will show all the weight loss. Does bmr go down a little, maybe? But not enough that any one using that term thinks it does. There is no “starvation mode”, or whatever dumbass thing that people think their body is in, making them gain weight when not eating.
Fat is literally kept by the body to be used when not eating. Humanity has fat stores because we had long periods of time where we didn’t eat, and needed a way to survive without eating. We just haven’t caught up with modern industry.
If you don’t eat, you will lose weight. It is not worse for weight loss.
Watch this. This video is the best explanation I’ve seen. I’ve watched it at least 5 times over the last few years. Worth the watch and definitely changed my perspective on fasting for the better.
My longest fast was 42 days during which I lost about 70 lbs. My metabolism did not seem to slow based on the weight lost. It makes sense to me also that it wouldn’t lower BMR because the same amount of fuel being consumed during feeding was available via my fat stores. Some of that lost weight was water, of course.
