Can the level of blood sugar be measured in your cells?

So Dr Fung says that after years of eating carbs your cells are overloaded with sugar and that’s why it takes so much insulin to push the sugar in your blood into the cells (his overflowing sugar bowl or suitcase analogies). Are there tests for this, like there are for sugar in the blood? (I don’t mean a home test, like BG, but a laboratory test). It seems that there would be. Or are these claims just the end result of these analogies?

Answer

Research scientist in infectious disease and immunology here. Just want to make sure everyone understands how cells work because I think there may be some confusion. Cells, make up everything in our bodies including tissues, muscles, organs, blood vessels, etc. Cells use osmosis to regulate the amount of solutes in the cell. If the environment outside of the cell is more dilute i.e. the blood or other fluid, the cell will pump water into the cell to ensure the osmotic pressure inside the cell equals the pressure outside. If environment outside the cell is more concentrated, the cell will pump water out of the cell to match the outside concentration. Your body is really good at self regulating from the cellular to organism level. This will be the case unless you are ill, injured, very young or very old. Your fasting bg will be a good representation of the concentration of sugar in your cells.
