Can you water fast on your period?

I’m curious, I wanted to start water fasting today for a week but I started my period today. It’s kinda heavy only lasts 5 days but can I water fast still, does it make any sort of difference in the body?

I’m doing it because I just need a huge detox, I’ve been eating lots of junk recently.

This Energy Blueprint Podcast episode with Dr. Stephanie Estima was very interesting and covers this issue in good detail. Episode webpage here

Answer

I try to fast before or after my period because I’m still recovering from low iron anemia and am treating for fibroid cysts. I absolutely cannot water fast while menstruating until this is cleared up. However, before these issues occurred, fasting made the cycle less intrusive.

Everyone’s situation is different, if you’re unsure, go for it but make sure you always have an emergency refeed at hand if needed and stay aware of what’s going on with your body (I keep frozen pureed vegetable soup that I can pop in the microwave for emergency refeed).
