Collagen in coffee, breaking fast?

Week 4 of IF 16/8-but I’ve been adding Collagen peptides to my Coffee in the morning for the past three weeks… and it has 70 calories… so, have I been breaking my fast!?! Gah! (I started it based on David Sinclair taking his AM supplement with a small amount of yogurt each morning and saying that wasn’t enough food to actually break his fast.)

Answer

It all depends on your goals. If you are trying to work on insulin resistance or lose weight, it will 100% break your fast and reset the clock. According to Gin Stephens, You can only have black coffee, black/Green/white tea, and unflavored and unsweetened water. Even fruity herbal teas, diet sodas, and flavored sparkling waters will break a fast because they trigger insulin production.

Answer

I’ve started spreading out my collagen across multiple cups of black coffee (and thus multiple hours). I take the 2 scoops over the course of like 3 cups (and 7 hours or so).

Does it break my fast when done this way? I don’t know. But what I do know is that if you’re taking collagen peptides, you have a reason for that. And that reason might be as important as your reasons for doing IF.

So you need to look at your whole wellness regimen and sometimes you will have to balance out what you do. Spread the collagen over time like me, or move it to your eating window, or do something else. Find what works for you to hit your goals.
