Collagen Peptides

Are there really any benefits to consuming Collagen Peptides supplements (brand called Vital Proteins) that I am seeing on television or is it all hype?

Answer

Only anecdotal - I started taking the powder for shoulder joint pain and it really seems to have improved.

Edit: I have always used vital proteins, no flavor, for about 2-3 years straight. When I stopped taking it once, my pain returned.

Answer

Yes. Here is quote from the study linked below: “In the meta-analysis, a grouped analysis of studies showed favorable results of hydrolyzed collagen supplementation compared with placebo in terms of skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles. The findings of improved hydration and elasticity were also confirmed in the subgroup meta-analysis. Based on results, ingestion of hydrolyzed collagen for 90 days is effective in reducing skin aging, as it reduces wrinkles and improves skin elasticity and hydration.”

And by the way, Sams Club has the Vital collagen at lower price than anywhere I have found (about $1 per ounce). Also, Vital collagen tested clean from heavy metals. And no, I have no affiliation with Vital.

Answer

No peer reviewed studies have shown benefits to collagen supplementation. As far as protein sources go, it is pretty sub-par as it is lacking in a number of amino acids. A diverse, quality diet is the way to go. Probably cheaper, too.

Side question here: I take whey, and creatine. I have 2 jugs of the vital collagen for my knees. But I’m kind of worrying it’s too many supplements, and could be a bit much for my body to process. I’m a healthy male 6’3 185. Thoughts?
