Compared to Meat-Based Protein, What makes Plant-Based Protein better?

Curious on the communities thoughts on this subject.

As I understand it, Meat-Based proteins are more bioavailable. Though understandably, Plant-Based proteins are better for the animals. Assuming someone wanted to make the switch to plant based proteins from meat, what benefits are there from a nutritional standpoint?

Answer

There are few benefits, aside from (depending on what type of meat you consumed) less cholesterol and saturated fats. But generally speaking, plants provide less bio available and incomplete proteins, whereas meat provides more bio available and complete proteins. It’s an ethical choice, but it’s playing on “hard mode”. (Source: nutrition coach NASM)

Answer

I am personally not arguing for or against this, but some people, like Valter Longo, would say that more bioavailable protein sources efficiently activate m-tor and IGF-1 which speed up aging. In this respect though, soy protein would have the same effect as any animal protein.

This hypothesis is not that well supported yet, however, here is a video series on the lifespan of popular health influencers(pt. 1, pt. 2, pt. 3). I think the one trend is that all of the people who live past 90 were not eating high protein diets, and they did physical activity.

Answer

I don’t it is essentialy “better”

It’s probably better to eat 100% plant based to meat only diet, they all have their pros and cons and the way you go about it matters. Some protein arr way more bioavailable too , not all plant based protein are efficient and some meat comes with increased risk.

In the end , if you feel good , continue what you are doing.
