Confusion around Palm Oils many names

I loled at the fact that the list includes “Fatty Acids”. All fats have fatty acids. It is impossible to have a fat that does not have fatty acids - if it didn’t have fatty acids, it wouldn’t be a fat.

That list is garbage.

These aren’t alternative names for palm oil, these are ingredients that could be derived from palm oil. E.g. palmitic acid in a product could come from palm oil, even though it could also be obtained much less efficiently from vegetable or coconut oil too.

Just because an ingredient could be derived from palm oil, doesn’t mean it is. They even have beta carotene on there because it is possible to get it from the red variety of palm oil. I can see a lot of commonly-used fatty compounds such as cetyl alcohol, ceteth-20, capric triglyceride etc… which can all be derived from palm oil, but are much more abundant in coconut oil. It makes no sense for them to have come from palm oil.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to know whether many of these ingredients are derived from palm oil or not in your food. The situation is even more difficult with cosmetics, because common cleansings agents, emollients and emulsifiers can all be derived from either coconut or palm oil, so it’s nearly impossible to know which one it comes from. However, at least with food, it is probably worth choosing minimally-processed foods without any potential palm-derived emulsifiers slipped in.
