Do unripened bananas spike your insulin less than ripe bananas

Hello I have this one question specifically about bananas since most other fruit don’t really have this property where it’s green it’s not sweet but when it’s brown it gets super sweet. Well they kinda do but they are gross but bananas is like one of those things where there is a sweet spot but I am just wondering like is the green banana better for you since it doesn’t really have the sugar yet or is there like less nutrients in the green ones. Thanks so much sorry for this long paragraph they said I couldn’t just ask a question in the title

Answer

Yes. Green bananas contain more resistant starch which digests down more slowly and lessens the insulin spike. If you can stomach it, there are also benefits to it in acting as a prebiotic for your good bacteria.

Answer

Unless you’re a diabetic I wouldn’t worry about that too much. As bananas ripen, yes, the sugar content does increase. Therefore, the likelihood of it spiking your insulin further is also increased.

However, if you’re focusing on insulin release, the glycemic index (GI) of a ripe banana is considered ‘low’ (some databases say approx. 48), so little to worry about if you are aiming to avoid huge fluctuations on blood sugar. Unripe (green) bananas fall lower on this scale.

There is a paper looking at the benefits of green bananas that could be worth a read if you wanted to delve further into this topic.
