Do you weigh meat cooked or uncooked?

I’m looking to count calories/macros and I want to know whether the nutrition information on meat labels is for cooked or uncooked meat. Can’t find consistent info online about this. Thanks!

Answer

Raw. If you order a 72oz steak, it doesn’t come to you weighing 72oz. Or if you order a half pound burger, that’s a raw half pound. Same way it’s sold at the market, a pound of beef is a pound of beef. After it’s cooked you still call it a pound because it was a pound of beef, even though it now weighs nowhere near that.

More specifically for your question though. The nutrition label and serving size is for however it’s sold. If you buy a thing of cooked meat, then go by the serving size weight on the label.

Thanks for the replies. I’m looking to log the most accurate info I can and I noticed there’s a big difference in the weight of raw vs cooked chicken, for example. Ideally I’d meal prep a lot of food and weigh cooked meat but I feel like the nutrition info is for raw so idk…

Answer

in general, nutritional info is usually calculated on raw / uncooked foods, so it’s easier to find info for raw meat. if it is processed, however, you should just check the label.however, you can also use the cooked weight. in fact, if you cook meat, it shrinks afterwards, because it loses water. for example, 100g of raw chicken have the same nutritional values of about 80g of cooked chicken.basically, you can do it either way, just try to add the word ‘raw/cooked’ when looking up nutritional info.
