does having medication break a fast?

(F) 30. I have terrible reflux and take proton pump inhibitor pill twice a day. Issue is, I can’t swallow pills and have to have them with at least the tiniest bit of food. So I have it with a literal sliver of carrot in the morning. does this technically break a fast and all of the biological benefits of it?

I’m doing OMAD. Mainly because I have never had breakfast and usually had a late lunch, so it is minimal effort for me to just skip lunch and have an earlier dinner instead. My main enemy is alcohol and the food binging it tends to cause me, but I think my body is at breaking point with it and I’m just going to have to cut it out (again). I just feel far too sick after having it and the older I get the worse it is.

Answer

Technically, yes, but I wouldn’t worry about it. Dealing with your reflux is more important than having a clean fast.

Basically, don’t let your fast get in the way of other medical issues you have. Being healthy is what you’re after and what’s important.

Answer

Not really, no. The threshold for what counts as breaking a fast is debated and depends on why you are fasting (gut rest, energy, weight loss, other issue).

For weight loss, which seems to be your concern? Generally you can consume 50 calories without worrying too much. That’s a fair amount of carrot (nearly 110g!).

Answer

I hope you find the same level of relief with fasting, as I’ve had. Reflux ruins things, but fasting has really helped me get control of it.

RE: swallowing pills—I learned a trick when I was a kid, as I couldn’t swallow pills either. Now, I take a drink—but hold the water in my mouth—then tilt my head back and flick the pill into my mouth. This allows me to swallow pill and water at once.

Good luck to you!!
