I (39f) need input/sources on whether something “breaks a fast”.
I have to take Metamucil (psyllium husk) everyday. I take 2 tablespoons (80 calories) of the real sugar orange Metamucil. If I take it on an empty stomach before I eat, it works well. If I take it after I’ve eaten, I have a lot of bloating and it doesn’t work as far as h the gastrointestinal benefits like regulating bowel movements. If I take it too close to eating, but before eating, I still feel bloated but it works okay (not as good as taking it an hour or two before eating).
My husband and I are doing 24+ hour fasts on Monday and Thursday and trying for 16:8 the rest of the days. The 24+ fasts are more like 36-40 hour fasts when we stop by 8 on Sunday/Wednesday and start at 8 or 12 on Tuesday/Friday. But I’m trying to figure out when I can take Metamucil without breaking my fast. I have been skipping it on the 24+ fast days, but psyllium husk works best if you take it regularly. I’m just not sure what to do!
I don’t have an answer to your question, but wanted to chime in that if you’re taking Metamucil for constipation, you should check out vitamin C ascorbate powder. It’s a non fiber way to help keep things moving. A massive dose of vitamin c taken on an empty stomach will cause water to be expelled into the small intestine. I’ve been on it for a decade after trying other solutions, including daily Metamucil.
I take psyllium husk powder when I’m starting my fast during the first 24 hours. It helps making me feel full. It’s 30 calories per tablespoon. I mix it with ultima replenisher so it has some flavor. I take 1 tablespoon and once again about 8 hours later.
I would not be using metamucil with sugar during a fast or other artificial sweeteners. Because those will cause insulin release and may make you hungry.
