Electrolytes that important for a 4-5 day fast?

A 4 or 5 day fast (not too much activity) interrupted by 3 days of what I consider healthy food (fruits, eggs, cheese etc.) Should I worry about electrolytes in this case? I don’t think it’s that long of a period. Kinda wanna lose weight.

I suspect that you will be much less comfortable without them than with them and since it has to do with keeping your heart beating, I personally would not take chances.

It is pretty easy to find the appropriate salts on Amazon.

Answer

It might not be life-threatening, but it sure could make you feel very uncomfortable. I just got out of my 72h fast and I was having severe headache and nausea just after a day. I took maybe half a teaspoon of salt (or less) and it made it all better. I was having a bad muscle cramps on the third day as well, which could be due to low magnesium intake. You should consider and at least be well informed of what it does and how much and how you should take.

Why make your fast more uncomfortable?

Read up on what deficiencies in each mineral does to you. It’s really not worth skipping it and it’s easy to add salt to your water.

Answer

I did my first 60 hour fast last week and felt unusually cold and weak at around 48 hours. Possibly lack of electrolytes but I don’t know. Next time I’ll supplement with them and see if it’s better

Edit: on a quick search, my symptoms seemed to match hyponatraemia, which could have been caused by drinking too much water
