Evidence on lemon juice for cleansing liver

I’ve heard from many people and blogs about lemon juice/lemon water cleansing or detoxing the liver. I was wondering where this hypothesis comes from and if there are any studies that seem to back it up. Thanks!

Answer

No studies - liver detox is more often than not a myth. Some foods can reduce inflammation but ‘removing toxins’ is not something that occurs. I have no idea where that hypothesis comes from either since lemons aren’t particularly special other than their high acidity

Answer

I hear this a lot about kidneys and I think the function of livers and kidneys gets confusing for a lot of people.

“It helps prevent kidney stones. The citric acid in lemons may help prevent kidney stones. Citrate, a component of citric acid, paradoxically makes urine less acidic and may even break up small stones. Drinking lemon water not only gets you citrate, but also the water you need to help prevent or flush out stones.”
