So I’ve seen various different brands of nuts, some can vary from pretty cheap to super expensive. I usually get mine from LIDL and they’re about £1.50 a 200g pack of almonds, cashews, etc.
I was wondering if anyone knows if splurging on expensive nuts has any purpose/value at all? Obviously there’s a factor of being responsibly sourced, but I’m talking nutrition. Like surely it must have some difference
Another factor to consider is whether roasted or raw, and the type of oils used.
I haven’t found a good reason why raw cashews are so much more expensive than the oily toasted ones.Raw taste so much better to me.
https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/soil-depletion-and-nutrition-loss/
This article speaks about the depletion of nutrients in fruits and vegetables over time because of soil being less nutrient rich through leaching of the soil and intensive agriculture where lots of pesticides are used and the “look” of the produce is more important so they selectively breed that and pay no attention to nutrient depletion. I looked this info up a while ago when I asked myself why should I care about eating certain “organic label” bananas instead of the cheap ones I can afford. Same banana right? Not always. I suppose this can apply to anything humans farm, but I don’t know about nuts specifically.
I find some of the more expensive ones do taste better. I wish it wasn’t true. But nuts from marks and Spencer are so much tastier than some of the cheaper ones I’ve tried. I only treat myself to m and s nuts occasionally if I feel like I’m not doing too bad for money or just need a treat.
You want dry roasted and preferably organic, nuts have phytates which prevent nutrient absorption, dry roasting lowers phytate content. Organic because some nuts are heavily sprayed with pesticides, you can search for average pesticide use on varying nuts online.
I guess something to add is country of origin, if that is something that matters to you I’ve seen where I live (Norway) dirt cheap nuts coming from Asian countries, while US nuts tend to be more expensive.
