fast & exercise ?

How do you guys fast AND workout ? I intermittent fast (19-5) and if I don’t have at the very least a protein bar right beforehand, I’ll be lightheaded very quickly during my workout, my ears will start ringing and I’ll feel very faint. How do you, during extended periods of fasting, manage to still exercise ?

I’m on my 3rd day of water fasting and I ran 4 miles (every day that I fast), easy. Once you hit ketosis, you’re burning ketones and this is a very good resource for your body, maybe the best! My weightlifting limit top line power decreases 70% but you get an increase in stamina at lower weight. When you do feed, holy smokes, the body knows exactly what to do with that protein and fat!

Reaching Ketosis can take 2-3 days. Getting to ketosis is uncomfortable for some however practice is good

Fasting does great for autophagy, which is the name of the game!

If you take electrolytes you won’t feel like this imo. I’ve done a few 5 day water fasts and worked out throughout with weights, my strength/endurance is exactly the same. It’s insane tbh but the growth hormone released and true keto status is why

Answer

I have to do it first thing in the morning. Even then I can only lift through day 3; after that, I can’t lift throughout the fast without feeling very lightheaded and lethargic (regardless of electrolyte intake).

How experienced are you with fasting? If you’ve fasted a bit your body will be metabolically flexible and switch over from burning glucose to burning fat pretty easily. If you’re new to fasting this switch takes a while and you’ll feel tired and light headed while it’s going on. I’m 4 days inn on a 7 day fast now. I lifted just as heavy in the gym today as i do when i’m not fasted. Heading out on a 13k walk now, don’t think it’ll be a problem. Just stay hydrated and keep your electrolytes in check and you should be good if your metabolically flexible.
