Fasting and pooping

I am doing one 24-hour fast per week.
Been doing it for about two months; it is going well.

Two things:

  1. When I am fasting, I do not poop as much as I usually do/would expect to.

  2. After I break my fast, my poop tends to be runny like diarrhea the next day.
Yesterday, I broke my fast at 1 pm with a big salad first.
Honest to God, at 3:45 my runny poop had some little bits of green lettuce in it. The salad I ate a mere 2 hours and 45 minutes previously was the only possible source of the green bits in my poop.
I had no idea “gut transit time” could be that quick.

Anyone else have experiences/ideas about either of those two things?

Answer

Don’t break your fast with a big salad. If you don’t have time for stuff like broth, break it 30 min before your meal with some psyllium husk or chia seeds (prepare those 30 min prior). Using chia seeds 30 min before a meal has helped me. It delays that speed run of your digestive system and keeps that first go a little more regular.

Answer

I remember reading somewhere that the physical act of eating, biting, chewing, swallowing, etc is one of the things that gets our digestion moving as the body wants to make room for new food.

So yeah, less frequent eating equals less moving things along, but then once we do eat that’s a trigger for the body to do the opposite.
