Fasting and the build up of uric acid crystals.

Im completely healthy both my kidneys and liver, Yet I have been suffering with gout which I believe is related to my fasting, from the age of 17 I have been fasting on water for 21 days many times, on green juices maybe 30 times in my life time, I have pretty much lived a life of fasting, on my last fast I was on my 17th day of a water fast when suddenly I had a horrific gout attack and had to go to the Er in excruciating pain, I’m wondering if all my fasting has had a negative consequence on my uric acid levels which r responsible for crystal deposition in joints, fasting increases uric acid and uric acid turns to crystals that inflict pain in the joints creating gout.

Answer

Uric acid does tend to increase during fasting. I do not believe there has been much researching on how you might prevent higher uric acid levels during fasting, besides ensuring a sufficient water intake.

I found out I could even get gout because I was fasting and while doing had my first attack. I was 21. My doctor had never seen someone that young get it. My big toe joint was huge and swollen and red. Once I started eating regularly it was fine.

Take baking soda and / or citrates. They alkalize the urine allowing your kidneys to filter out uric acid easily. I’ve had gout from fasting, and not eating enough fat when I first started carnivore. I was on allopurinol and colchicine for awhile but it never really went away. As soon as the colchicine ran out the pain would come. What worked for me was baking soda in the mornings, and citrate after meals. I’d dissolve baking soda in a large glass of water, and add citric acid until it reacted with all the baking soda and became pleasantly sour from the excess citric acid. I’d sweeten this with some non-nutritive sweetener and flavor with a citrus extract. It was basically super charged crystal lite. This knocked my gout out in two days. I kept it up for a few weeks just to be sure. I cut back on the protein and eat more fat, and haven’t had gout since, even during a fast. I still keep baking soda and citric acid on hand just in case.
