Fasting and Training

I’m looking to do some extended fasts of 3 or 5 days but I am also wanting to exercise regularly. My goal is to lose a significant amount of weight but I also don’t want to overdue it with fasting/exercising. For those of you who have experience with 3 to 5 day fasts, have you also been able to exercise without feeling like you’re going to pass out? Or would you recommend doing 24 to 48 hour fasts and exercising around my meals?

Answer

I could walk or swim at low intensity. Weight training was a no go. The first three days I did not want to be too far from the bathroom. I would not even try this the first or second week. If you do 1-2 day fasts regularly then you might be ok. I jumped in with no fasting history and the effects were rough.

Everything I’ve ever read/watched has said not to exercise while fasting because you’re already using the calories your body has on hand just to stay alive.

That said, I don’t think that a 30 min yoga/pilates routine would hurt things too much and would keep you active without leaving the house.

Could always give the fast a few days to give your body the time it needs to become fat adapted . Test with keto strips and then gauge how you feel after each workout . Start low and adjust from there. Had a friend one time do keto and combined it with running. Experienced a heart attack. He recovered but idk what factors all played in it just again, start low and give your body that time to adapt. A lot of people love to “ Oh if I combine it with this I’ll lose weight twice as fast!” Then forgetting the amount of stress they will put them selves mentally and physically.

So you’re going to want to focus on utilizing the atp system which is in the very heavy 1-4 rep range and then anything that goes longer than 3 minutes basically what I’d recommend is doing 1-4 reps of squat deadlift and bench press. Then doing some walking/ running at a low level. Walking is probably better for running.
