Hey Fasting Community,
I’ve (29M) been intermittent fasting 16:8 for several years now which has helped my type 1 diabetes quite a bit. My recent A1C is 6.0 but my doctor recently stated my blood pressure is elevated. Not quite high enough to be put on blood pressure medication which I’m relieved about but it is still concerning to me since I have Type 1 diabetes. This leads to an elevated risk for heart disease. I have recently gotten into 20:4 and pushing myself fasting further/longer. Are there any TYPE 1 diabetics here that fast for longer than 24 hours? Are there any concerns with fasting longer than 24 hours? Are there any folks with high blood pressure that have found benefits to fasting? Start weight is 195lbs current weight is 185lbs and my goal weight is about 170lbs. I have an insulin pump with an integrated CGM to help/monitor my blood sugar.
You need to find out why your BP is high in the first place.
I had elevated sodium and was fasting without sodium until levels dropped to normal. I was checking it every Monday and Thursday with 2 days lab delay. It took 17 days of water fasting for my sodium reserves to deplete and BP my dropped from 165 average to solid 115 over one day on 17th day of the fast. I continued the fast to 21 days to see how it goes.
I have very high re-absorption of sodium and now I intake on average 300 mg of sodium a day and my BP is rock solid at 110-115 without medication. Before this I was taking BP medication for 12 years.
I could do it without fasting but with the amount of sodium that is inevitable in food it would take me over a year on a very special low sodium diet.
