Answer

Fasting is a normal behavior, done frequently throughout history by multiple societies and religions. If the person who is worried is of a certain religion, appealing to that can help.

Also, you can point out the massive benefits from fasting: autophagy is a massive one. Also cognitive help, reducing inflammation, and healing or a boost in health in regards to insulin.

Note: any type of eating, including healthy eating, can cause eating disorders and obsessions. If you’ve had a history of that, talk to a therapist. If you haven’t, knowing the signs can make sure regardless of your diet you protect yourself.

Social challenges, sometimes. My friends are very supportive and understanding, and like to invite me out and don’t give me shit for drinking water and tipping for it—you quickly get rid of people who do give you a hard time. But we party together a lot and that was an adjustment for me, for us, but it’s worked out well.

For people who think you have an eating disorder, if you’ve explained your point of view and they’re still judgmental, that’s theirs to own. Can’t live your life trying to control other people.

Only disadvantage I’ve really noticed so far is that it can make unplanned social outings a bit harder - plan to fast but if a friend invited me to dinner, I don’t get out much but it’s hard to say no. At least I tend to stay under calorie limit/stay keto when this happens

Like most people have stated, fasting can affect things socially a lot. I don’t just mean having to explain that you’re making changes to better your health, but also low patience and a lack of tolerance for BS, and if you’re fasting during the holidays, you may have to skip out on enjoying family gatherings where consuming food is involved. Also, people tend to get a lot less sleep during certain periods of fasting. You may also suffer from diarrhea on day 3, and if you consume your electrolytes too fast, then that cycle could continue throughout the fasting period.

For tips regarding people thinking you’re starving yourself I’d say two things.

  1. Try not to tell people that you’re fasting. Some people cannot fathom the idea, and flat out refuse to. Even if you explain the science behind it, you can try to make people understand, but you can’t understand it for them.
  2. For people suggesting that you’re starving yourself/harming yourself. I’d approach it with the fact if you were to stay obese/overweight, you’d be harming yourself even more so in the long run, and at least you’re making a conscious effort that takes a lot of will power to achieve to prevent this.

I hope this helps

I was overeating when fasting too long(over 16 hours). So i didnt lose any weight, my libido was also bad. When i do 14-16 (Circadian) i go down steady and feel great, and everything functions as it should ;-)
