Fasting vs inflammation

I’ve been fasting for 34 hours and the scale is almost 6lbs down. I have horrible, painful digestion most days so I am thinking that my gut has been needing this break. I know it’s not 6lbs of fat, so I assume this is water weight and inflammation going down. Do you guys think that’s correct?

Answer

definitely pretty much all water weight going down. FWIW its estimated that a pound of fat is around 3,500 calories. However accurate that is (no doubt its a massive oversimplification), a person uses around 2,000-3,000 calories per day depending on sex/age/weight/height/activity.

So keep that in mind. The vast majority of weight lost in the first week of a fast or eating a ketogenic diet is going to be water weight.

Answer

Yes it is mostly water weight. A simple way to determine weight loss from fasting is this: Figure out your daily calorie needs for your weight, age and frame based on your activity level. For example, I need 1200 cals if I am in a coma, 1400 if it’s a lazy day, 1600 to 1800 if I am very physically active. There are plenty online calculators.

Next- determine how many calories your body used on your fast day/days. A lazy day of fasting only burns a little over 1/3 of a pound of fat for me.
